Eco Quilt Contest – Winner announced as Blackmore & Roy’s own Lisa Alexander!

Brother Australia has announced Lisa Alexander as the Australian Winner of the 17th Annual Brother International Quilting Contest with her entry “Nature’s Way”!

Lisa’s stunning entry was awarded first place! She’ll be taking a complimentary cruise to Singapore!

Brother International Australia, a leading manufacturer in home sewing machines, is proud to announce the Australian winner of its 17th Annual Brother International Quilting Contest.

The Brother International Quilting Contest is a creative initiative from Brother HQ in Japan for the Asia Pacific region designed to encourage participants to create an Eco themed quilt. The theme is inspired by Brother Earth, which is Brother’s commitment to build a sustainable future.

The prize for this year’s contest was the incredible once in a lifetime opportunity on board a luxurious quilting cruise ship to Singapore with craft expert and Brother machine user, Michelle Marvig. Valued at over $7,020 AUD, the 16-night cruise on the renowned Ovation of the Seas will include sightseeing tours of Brisbane, Darwin, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore all whilst learning quilting techniques from Australia’s finest craft experts.

The MS Ovation of the Seas. Wow!

Julia Springbett, Marketing Manager, Home Sewing Machines at Brother International Australia said:

“It is a thrill to see the entries come in, and this year, with more entries than ever, the standard of quilts submitted was through the roof. Each quilt told its own story, with many different subject matters and interpretations of the Eco theme represented.”

The winner of the Australian component of the contest was our very own Lisa Alexander of Western Australia, with her stunning artwork inspired by the bee and the vital part they play in the ecosystem and our survival. The quilt is titled “Nature’s Way”.

Lisa said:

“The quilt depicts the Queen Bee, who plays a vital part in the ecosystem and our survival. It shows the queen bee watching over the busy worker bees pollinating flowers and working on the honeycomb. It is made up of approximately 120 flower petals, 90 leaves and 60 wings embroidered on washaway, cut back individually using a burning tool and sewn into place to give a 3D effect.”

Brother Australia have also released photographs of this years quilt entrants. Each and every one was stunning in their own right – it must have been a nightmare to judge!

The top 10 Australian quilts — yet to be announced — have also been sent to Japan to be part of the International Quilting Contest. A panel of Fashion College and Magazine Experts will judge all Asia Pacific entries and award a collective prize pool in excess of USD 3,500. The quilts will be judged during December and January; an overall winner will then be announced late January on the Brother Australia Facebook page (www.facebook.com/brotheraustralia)
